We All Need To Be A Little More Dory

I find it quite amazing sometimes how many parallels my IM and running efforts have.

The other day, I hardly thought anything about receiving several more online payments (and the fact I have received payments every day in 2018).

I also didn’t think twice about going out for a 13.1 mile (half marathon) run before tea last night.

If you had told me a couple/three years ago that this would be the situation, I would have probably laughed in your face at even the suggestion.

The fat asthmatic kid who always came last at school cross country. The technophobe, who hadn’t even used a PC until after he left school.

With both, I have just incrementally improved day by day by doing a little bit of the right thing on an (almost) daily basis.

Unlike some, there was no blinding light of inspiration that suddenly brought me relative success online or out running.

No, just a boring bit by bit, step by step improvement from boring step by step effort.

Yes, there were days where things went especially well with a bumper income coming in, or when a chunk was taken off a PB…

…but to match those days, there were also the days where I just felt as if I was banging my head against a brick wall, wondering why me!

There were the injuries offline, there were hackers online and then there were the days where I thought I was doing everything right but still seemed to be going backwards…

…they were always the worst, where you start questioning everything you are doing!

But the one ability I guess I do have is a bit of ‘Dory-ability’.

You know, Nimo’s mate, whos mantra was ‘Just keep swimming’

So if you are trying to achieve anything offline or online my humble advice is:

#1 Think long-term – see where you are now compared to a month, year, or even 5 years.

#2 Take small steps regularly – whatever it is you want to achieve chip away at it on a regular basis. You might not see instant results, but just focus on advice #1, think long term.

#3 Try to enjoy the journey to wherever you are trying to get to, it makes

#4 Be like Dory
